There is something deeply restorative about giving yourself permission to fully receive.
Massage is not only about easing muscle tension. It is an opportunity for your nervous system to soften, your breath to deepen, and your body to feel supported and cared for.
A few small choices before and during your appointment can make a significant difference to how you experience your treatment and how long the benefits last afterwards.
Give Yourself Space Afterwards
If possible, try to avoid rushing straight back into work, errands, or a busy schedule after your massage.
Creating even a small amount of quiet space afterwards allows your body time to integrate the treatment. You may notice yourself feeling calmer, sleepier, lighter, or more emotionally settled after a session. Giving yourself time to move slowly can help those benefits last longer.
If you can, book your treatment at a time where you can go home afterwards, have a gentle walk, drink plenty of water, or simply rest.
Massage works best when your nervous system feels safe enough to soften.
Leave the Day at the Door
Many women arrive carrying the mental load of work, family life, appointments, notifications, and constant stimulation.
Before your treatment begins, try allowing yourself a moment to pause.
Switch your phone off or place it on silent. Take a few slow breaths. Let your mind know that for the next hour or two, there is nowhere else you need to be.
You do not need to arrive perfectly relaxed. That is part of what the treatment is for. But giving yourself permission to mentally step out of the outside world can help you settle into the experience more deeply.
Avoid Coming Straight After a Heavy Meal
A light meal or snack beforehand is absolutely fine, but arriving very full can sometimes make it harder for your body to fully relax, particularly during abdominal, pregnancy, fertility or deeper restorative massage work.
Your body is already directing energy towards digestion after a heavy meal. Keeping things lighter beforehand can help you feel more comfortable on the table and allow you to settle more easily into the treatment.
Tell Your Therapist Exactly What You Need
One of the most important things to remember is this:
This is your treatment.
You never need to worry about being “difficult” or “too picky.” Your comfort matters deeply.
Please tell your therapist if:
the room feels too warm or too cool
you would like the music louder or softer
you prefer lighter or firmer pressure
you need extra bolstering or support
something feels uncomfortable
you would simply like more silence during your session
Every body is different, and the best treatments are collaborative.
Open communication allows your massage to be tailored specifically to what your body needs on that particular day.
There is no expectation for you to tolerate discomfort quietly.
Come As You Are
Some days you may arrive feeling anxious, emotional, exhausted, overstimulated, sore, disconnected from your body, or simply very tired.
That is okay.
You do not need to prepare yourself to be “good” at receiving massage.
Often the women who need rest and support the most are the ones who struggle hardest to slow down. Your treatment can simply be a place to exhale for a while.
